Art for Justice Fund Grantee Desmond Meade Named One of TIME’s 100 Most Influential

Desmond Meade, president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2019. In her statement on his work, Stacey Abrams, Georgia politician and founder of the advocacy group Fair Fight Action, commended Meade for his role in re-enfranchising Floridians with felony records, leading to “the largest expansion of voting rights in half a century.”

“The formerly incarcerated—returning citizens—often face a cruel irony in America. Having paid their debt to society, too many are banned from the ballot box that could help them dismantle policies that essentially extend their sentences. Desmond Meade decided to break this pattern for 1.4 million Floridians.”
