Grantee Cohort Spring 2022
Allen Kwabena Frimpong is a cultural strategist, cooperative entrepreneur, and resource mobilizer whose body of work is committed to building a solidarity economy for all. He is co-founder of AdAstra Collective, Liberation Ventures, and ZEAL. ZEAL is a worker-owned collaborative of creatives developing emergent cultural strategies that builds equity for community wealth. Through the work of art, studio incubation and cultural production we celebrate our lineages, assert our voices, archive our legacy, and showcase our artistic talents across the Black diaspora. We are committed to creating spaces for Black artists to thrive. As a cooperative our values (Love, Joy, Grace, and Abundance) are aligned and principled in building a movement toward Black artists owning and stewarding the means of our own cultural production through the practice of reparations and building solidarity economy in local communities.
We see artists producing bodies of work through artist and studio incubation processes that are creating liberation pathways for society. When Black artists and creatives are grounded in the legacy of the Black aesthetic that facilitates their leadership development, their creative and artistic body of work stands inside of diverse lineages of abolition as a purposeful, committed, and functional acts of liberation.
