Grantee Cohort Spring 2018, Spring 2019, Spring 2020
The Pretrial Justice Institute (PJI), one of the original Art for Justice Fund grantee partners, is dedicated to advancing safe, fair and effective juvenile and adult pretrial justice practices and policies that honor and protect all people.
With support from Art for Justice, PJI expanded its national strategy, focusing on promoting racial equity, reframing pretrial justice reform, enhancing community education and updating its website. In Ohio, PJI used its funding to work with Dr. Zaria Davis to promote a pretrial justice bill that emphasizes racial justice, data collection, pretrial liberty and community investment.
In 2020 Pretrial Justice Institute (PJI) leveraged its Art for Justice support to partner with the National Philharmonic at Strathmore to co-create an online event that combines classical music with awareness raising about the principle “no pretrial justice without racial justice.” They also partnered with the Ohio Student Association, to support a new collaborative of artists from across the state to partner with grassroots advocates. These artists’ efforts expanded the changing narrative around the power of partnerships between white and Black people who experience the same economic, environmental and criminal legal oppression. Also part of the collective are The Hive, a burgeoning collective of young artists, S.O.U.R.C.E. Studio, an artist-centered/action-oriented nonprofit, and the New American Art Gallery, a cooperative art gallery, cultural hub and educational organization.
