Shutdown Stops First Step Act

The current government shutdown overshadowed the passage of the First Step Act, a historic piece of criminal justice reform legislation, and delayed implementation of some of its key provisions. Jessica Jackson Sloan, the national director of #cut50 – an initiative to end mass incarceration operated by Art for Justice grantee DreamCorps – recently talked about the shutdown’s impact on the First Step Act in a video by Newsy:

“We enjoyed [passage of the First Step Act] for a few hours, but then it was time to get back to work, because we know when you pass a law the majority of the work is just getting started. The biggest problem is the implementation.”
